Mussoorie
(34 km from Dehradun) is situated in the foothills of the Himalayan ranges
in the state of Uttaranchal in North India. It lies in the Garhwal region at
an elevation of 6,578 ft/ 2500 m. The splendid views of the pine forests and
snow-laden peaks leave no one untouched. There are even modern bungalows,
malls and wonderfully laid-out gardens that are no less attraction for the
tourists. As soon as summer sets in tourists begin to pour into the
beautiful city of Mussorie.
Nearby Attractions
» The Mall - The Mall begins at Gandhi Chowk and
ends at the Clock Tower. It straddles a ridge extending from Cloud's End in
the west to Rockville in the east. From Gandhi Chowk to the Clock Tower is
but an hour's walk.
» Tibetan Temple - The Tibetan Temple is located in
the Happy Valley area of Mussorie. The temple stands as a proof to the rich
Tibetan cultural heritage. The temple attracts a large number of tourists
and visitors from all across the world.
» Gun Hill - Gun Hill is the second highest point
in Mussoorie. The place offers magnificent views of the area. The hill
station appears to be changing colours every minute. There are fabulous
trekking options for the trekkers as well. The hill can be reached from
Kachehri (a 20-minute stroll). There is a 400-metre ropeway to get to the
hill.
» Kempty Fall - 013 km from Mussoorie lies the
Kempty Fall. John Mekinan chose and developed this place into a tourist
destination. No wonder, today the place sees a huge number of tourists from
all over.
» Camel's Back Road - The Camel's Back Road is yet
another attraction of the town. It's a 3 km stretch from the Library to
Kulri Bazaar. One can have a pleasant walk along the stretch. scrambling
down the northern slopes of Mussoorie, one arrives at the Aglar river which
is a tributary of the Yamuna.
» Mussoorie Lake - The Mussoorie Lake is located at
a distance of 7 km on the Highway to Dehradun. From here, the Doon Valley
looks magnificent. There are boating facilities available here as well.
» Municipal Gardens - The Municipal Gardens was
formerly known as the Botanical Gardens of Mussorie. It was the famous
geologist Dr H. Fackner who laid the foundations of the garden in the last
century.
Reaching
Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (58 km) is the nearest airport from
Mussoorie. There are regular Vayudoot and Jagson flights from New Delhi to
the Doon Valley (50 min). Taxis and buses are available from the airport to
take you to Mussoorie. Dehradun is the nearest railhead. The railway station
is well linked through super-fast trains to the major destinations of the
country. There are even direct bus services available from the city of Delhi
(278 km).
Best Time to Visit
Mussoorie can be best visited between the months of March and June and
between October and December.
