Ramganga and the Kosi rivers are fabulous options for Mahaseer and Catfish
fishing. Mahaseer is a freshwater fish that is found in the waters of the
hill rivers in Uttaranchal. The scaly Mahaseer can grow quite big and shows
more sport than a salmon. That is why, this fish is considered to be an
interesting catch for the fishing enthusiasts. Catching a Mahaseer is great
fun as it grabs the bait quickly, especially if the bait is live fish, fly,
plug or spoon.

Ramganga River (Near Corbett National Park, Uttaranchal)
The Ramganga river near Corbett Tiger Reserve (Uttaranchal) offers a wide
range of options for angling and fishing trip. The river is mostly known for
its Mahaseer and Catfish. The biggest catches recorded here are Mahaseer 76
pounds and Catfish 112 pounds. Fishing is allowed here between October 1 and
June 30. The ideal time, however, is from October till mid December and from
mid February to the end of June. Fishing is permitted on the stretch between
Ramganga Resort and Domunda, with the stretch extending around 14 km. The
fishing area around the resort lies within walking distance. However, one
has to take a jeep (45 minutes) to reach Domunda. Domunda is a restricted
area as it is a part of the Corbett National Park. An entry fee has to be
paid to enter the area. Road to this spot remains open in the month of
November, depending upon the weather conditions.

Kosi river is yet another fantastic option for fishing trip. The river is
particularly popular for Mahaseer. Fishing can be done here between October
1 and June 30. The best season, however, is from October till mid December

Periods of the Year
There are two periods of the year for anglers interested in Mahaseer
fishing trip. One is in Autumn (Sep/ Oct/ Nov) when the river begin to clear
after the monsoons and second is in Spring (March/ April/ May) when the
level of the rivers begin to raise due to the early monsoon rains. The
Himalayan rivers are expected to clear around the end of September. During
Spring time, the optimum fishing time can vary ranging from the beginning of
March to the end of May. Mahaseer move down the rivers in Autumn as the
river levels begin to drop.
