adventure activities that invite adventure-lovers from all parts of the
world. Skiing at Auli is like a dream coming true. It is one of the most
popular winter sports destinations in the Garhwal hills of Uttaranchal.
Located at an elevation of 2500-3050 m above sea level, Auli has a lot to
offer both to the experienced and the beginners. During the summer, Auli is
inviting but during the winter it is overpoweringly attractive.
Winter Sports at Auli
Come winter and Auli dons an appearance that can touch and move even the
sternest heart. Its snow-laden mountain slopes and fabulous facilities are
truly commendable. It can be reached either by road or ropeway from
Joshimath. The place offers splendid views of the peaks like Nanda Devi,
Kamet and Dunagiri. From January till March the Auli slopes are covered with
3-metre thick carpet of snow. The excellent backdrop of the snow-capped
peaks is sure to lift the spirits of the skiers. Skiing festival are also
conducted to add charm to the experience of the adventure seekers. The
festivals include national championship held in the months of February and
March. Other attractions at Auli include cable-car rides, rope lifts etc.
One can also spend the day building snowmen and having snowballs fights.
Skiing Courses at Auli
The GMVN conducts a 7-day and a 14-day skiing courses for those who are new
to this filed and wish to enjoy the experience of skiing in the breathtaking
surroundings of the snow-laden Himalayas. These courses are held during the
period of January-March. The course participants are also provided with the
basic ski equipment and lift facilities along with boarding and lodging.

The Ski Lift System - The 500-metre ski lift system is the longest cable
car in Asia, connecting Joshimath with Gorson. This lift system is locally
known as trolley.
» The Long Chair Lift - The chair lift is 800 m in
length and connects the lower slopes with the upper slopes at Auli. The
chair lift makes it easier for the skiers to zip up in moments. They can ski
down rapidly once they reach the ski starting point.
» Food Outlets & Restaurants - On the way to
Auli, there are a number of private food-outlets as well as Government-run
restaurants.
» Skiing Equipment - One can easily find all the
needed skiing equipment at the GMVN. The equipment include modern alpine
skis, Nordic skis, gloves and goggles. However, the tourists, if interested,
may bring their own ski equipment.
» Medical Facilities - Medical facilities are
available at Jishimath. The place has got well-equipped hotels. At Auli,
there are doctors available round the clock. However, tourists are advised
to bring their first-aid kit along.
Skiing Essentials
Tourists are advised to bring woollen clothing, cap, dark glasses, socks,
gloves, mufflers, pullovers, wind-proof jacket, gum/snow boots, torch light
etc. Taking into account the weather conditions of the place, tourist should
take along clothes to match the weather. The temperature during winters may
drop down to a minimum of -8 degrees centigrade.
